Book Review

Book Review : On Black Sister’s Street by Chika Unigwe

“Four very different women have made their way from Africa to the red light district of Brussels. They have come to claim for themselves the riches they believe Europe promises but when one of them is murdered… Their already fragile world is shattered”

Nigerian writers have literally carved out a hole in my heart and wedged themselves somewhere that makes me feel so damn good when i read their books

I have been lucky to read some exceptional stuff from them

That said, i have been lucky to read an amazing gem. The book itself is sad and when one review said the book is powerful and will leave me haunted best believe I did not know what i was getting myself into

So beautiful written as it tells in first person the stories of some exceptional women and how they ended up in Antwerp Belgium as sex workers a the way from Nigeria

The author does a good job of painting the plights of these women. It also educates on the hidden work of sex trade that is still going on in this day and age

I’m having a serious case of book hangover with this one as it left quite the after taste by giving a voice to the voiceless and restoring dignity. It made me start questioning all the things I and A lot of people take for granted..Choosing to act as if some things that happen around the world are so detached from our individual selves that we don’t spare a thought for the plight others go throw in the quest for happiness? Success? Friendship? Riches? Loyalty? All in all..This book reminded me it’s a cruel world out there and for some women the battle for equality is but a breeze that gets to them after it has become humid with no comfort and reprieve

For a book this humane…id recommend it to anyone as it offers a window on a fascinating and unfamiliar world where women laugh and fight and struggle to survive
